Baby Naming Astrology Guide

In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into nine parts called Navamsha. Each Navamsha corresponds to a specific syllable or pronunciation unit, and the "Bhav Madhya" or house cusp in each zodiac sign plays a crucial role in selecting the best name. There are 108 Navamsha in total, and each is associated with a unique syllable, forming what is known as "Nama Pada" or "Nama Nakshatra."

For instance, if a person is named "Lalit," the name corresponds to strengthening the fourth Navamsha of the Cancer sign. If the fourth Navamsha falls in an auspicious house in the individual's chart, the name will bring positive influences. However, if this Navamsha is located in an inauspicious house, the name may cause challenges or difficulties for the person.

Astrologically, selecting the right name based on these considerations can have a significant impact on the person’s life, ensuring positive effects on their health, career, and overall well-being.

Wrong Name Selection in Astrology

  • Janam Nakshatra Falling in the 6th House: If the Janam Nakshatra, or birth constellation, falls in the 6th house, the phonetic sound of the name strengthens the influence of the 6th house. The 6th house is associated with diseases and enemies. In this case, the name can inadvertently amplify negative influences related to health and adversaries, making it an unfavorable choice.

  • Janam Nakshatra Falling in the 8th House: The 8th house represents miseries, death, and long-term ailments. If the Janam Nakshatra falls here and the native’s name aligns with this constellation, it could strengthen the negative aspects of the 8th house, leading to increased miseries and struggles.

  • Janam Nakshatra Falling in the 12th House: The 12th house governs losses, isolation, and spiritual struggles. If the Janam Nakshatra falls in the 12th house, and the name chosen for the individual resonates with it, it may further activate the negative aspects of the 12th house, leading to losses and setbacks in life.

When is the Perfect Time for Namakaran?

Traditionally, the Namakaran ceremony, which involves naming the baby, is performed after the 'Jatakarma' sanskara, a rite celebrating the child's birth. In modern times, due to the higher birth rate, the Namakaran ceremony has often been combined with the astrology-based ritual of selecting a baby name, typically within a few weeks of birth.

According to tradition, the ideal time for Namakaran is 11 days after the child's birth. This timing follows the 'Sutika' or 'Suddhikaran' period, during which the mother and child are kept in a socially isolated state for post-natal care. While the 11th day is a common practice, it is not strictly fixed. The exact timing can be adjusted based on astrological guidance or family preferences, and in some cases, the ceremony may even be postponed until the child’s first birthday.

The Traditional Hindu Practice of Namakaran

In the traditional Hindu Namakaran ritual, both the mother and father begin by performing pranayama, prayer, and mantra chanting in the presence of a priest. If the father is absent, the child's grandfather or uncle may take his place in conducting the ritual, offering prayers to the God of Fire, the elements, and the spirits of the ancestors.

To start the ceremony, rice grains are spread on a bronze thali or dish. The father then writes the chosen name with a gold stick, simultaneously chanting the name of God. After this, the father whispers the child's name in the newborn’s ear, repeating it four times along with a prayer.

The family members present at the ceremony also repeat a few words once the priest formally accepts the name. Following this, the blessings of elders are given, and gifts may be exchanged. The ceremony concludes with a feast shared with family and friends. Often, a family astrologer will present the child's horoscope during this celebration.

Selecting a Name

Vedic astrology can help select a child’s name. The initial letter is considered especially auspicious, and there are five general principles for determining what the initial letter of a child's name should be:

  • Janam Nakshatranam (the nakshatra Lord of the Moon)
  •  Masanam (according to the child's month of birth);
  • Devatanama (after the family deity);
  • Rashinama (according to the child's Zodiac sign); and
  •  Samsarikanama (the worldly name), as an exception to all the above.

It is traditionally believed that a boy's name should consist of letters in even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) and girls' names should consist of odd-numbered letters (3, 5, 7, 9), but 11 is considered the most auspicious length for both genders.

If you already know the child's birth star, you can use the table which is given below. The table to arrive at the first letters of your baby girl's good name for a newborn baby as per astrology and select a name from the favourite Hindi girl names list.
